How to Ask for a Raise Without Apologizing for It

Asking for more money is not a plea. Here is how to make the case with confidence.

The scripts that work

Opening the conversation
""I want to talk about my compensation. Based on my contributions over the past [timeframe], I’m asking for [amount] percent.""
You state your request as a fact, not a question. You are opening a negotiation, not making a request.
When they ask what you want
""I’ve done the research and based on my impact, I’m asking for [specific number]. Is that something you can support?""
Specificity signals you’ve thought this through. Vague requests get vague answers.
When you get a counter
""I appreciate that. My ask stands at [number]. What would it take to get there?""
You acknowledge the offer without accepting it immediately. You stay in the negotiation.

What to avoid — and why

""I know times are tough, but…""
You’ve already signaled you expect resistance. Lead with strength.
""I hope this isn’t too much to ask.""
This frames your compensation as something they are granting, not something you have earned.
""I’m not sure if this is the right time, but…""
If it isn’t the right time, ask when it is — but don’t open with uncertainty.

Responses when they don't accept the no

They say:
""We don’t have budget for that right now.""
You say:
"What would need to change for that to be possible? I want to understand the path forward."
They say:
""What would you say if I said no?""
You say:
"I’d want to understand what I need to demonstrate to be in that range next review cycle."
They say:
""You’re already well-compensated.""
You say:
"Based on my contributions and market rates, I believe [ask] is appropriate. I’m happy to share the data."

The dynamic under the surface

Women and Black workers are statistically less likely to negotiate compensation and more likely to apologize when they do. Both patterns cost real money, compounding over time. The discomfort you feel when advocating for yourself is not a signal that you are doing something wrong — it is a signal that the system was designed to make you feel that way. Ask for what you have earned. The worst they can say is no.
