How to Leave Work at a Reasonable Time Without Being Judged

Leaving on time is not a character flaw. Here is how to protect your hours without a speech.

The scripts that work

When someone notices you’re leaving
""I’m wrapping up for today. I’ll be back at [time] tomorrow.""
No explanation. No apology. Just a status update.
When a manager implies you should stay later
""I’ve got what I needed to accomplish today. I’ll pick up on [project] in the morning.""
You assert completion without defending your departure time.
When someone says "must be nice" about leaving on time
""It is nice. I make sure it happens.""
Dry. Direct. No defensiveness.

What to avoid — and why

""I have to get home.""
Every "have to" signals that something external is making you leave. Own it.
""I’ll finish this at home.""
This signals that you are taking work home, which validates the expectation that you should be doing more.
""Sorry, I have to run.""
Apologizing for leaving at your scheduled time trains people to see it as something to apologize for.

Responses when they don't accept the no

They say:
""We need you to stay for [reason].""
You say:
"I’m not available this evening. What’s the urgency, and can it wait until tomorrow?"
They say:
""You always leave early.""
You say:
"I leave at my scheduled time. That’s consistent."
They say:
""The team stays later than this.""
You say:
"I’m measuring output, not hours. I’ve completed my work for the day."

The dynamic under the surface

The person who leaves on time is often perceived as less committed than the person who stays late — even when the person who leaves produces more in their hours. This is a perception problem, not a fact problem. What you can control: leaving on time consistently, delivering on your commitments, and not making a production of your departure. Visibility and presence are not the same as contribution.
