Telling a Relative to Stop Commenting on Your Body
Body comments from relatives are common and genuinely harmful. Here's how to stop them.
Say This
The scripts that work
In the moment, the first time
""I need you to stop commenting on my body. It's not welcome and I'm asking you to stop.""
Direct and clear. You've named what you need. The simpler the better here — this is not a conversation to finesse.
When they frame it as a compliment
""I know you mean it kindly. I still need you to not comment on my body. Please.""
You don't accept the framing, but you stay kind.
When it's a repeat offense
""I've asked you not to comment on my body. I'm going to change the subject now and I'd like you to follow.""
You name the history and take control of the conversation.
Don't Say This
What to avoid — and why
""It's fine, don't worry about it." (when it's not fine)"
You just gave permission for it to continue. Absorbing it is not the same as accepting it.
""I know you're just trying to be nice…" (then dropping it)"
You've accepted their framing and let them off the hook. Your discomfort is data. Name it.
"A long explanation of your relationship with your body"
You don't owe anyone your body history. "Stop" is a complete sentence.
If They Push Back
Responses when they don't accept the no
They say:
""I'm just saying you look healthy!" / "I'm just worried about you.""
You say:
"My body is not a topic I want to discuss. Full stop."
They say:
""You're so sensitive.""
You say:
"Maybe. And I'm still asking you to stop."
They say:
"They do it again at the next gathering"
You say:
"We talked about this. I'm not going to engage when you comment on my body." (Then move away from the conversation.)
What's Actually Happening Here
The dynamic under the surface
Body commentary in families often masquerades as care — "I'm worried about your health," "You look so good, have you lost weight?" The actual function is control: maintaining a position of authority over someone's physical appearance and, by extension, their choices. You do not owe anyone access to your body as a topic. The discomfort of this boundary is brief. The cost of not setting it is years of dreading family gatherings.
