Turning Down a Side Project or Favor

Every yes to a side project is a no to something else. Here's how to make your no count.

The scripts that work

When someone asks you to help with their project on the side
""I'm not in a position to take on outside projects right now. I hope you find the right person for this.""
Warm close. No explanation required.
When it's framed as "just a quick favor"
""I've got a full plate right now and I'm not going to be helpful to you the way you need. I have to pass.""
You name why the yes would be bad for them — not just inconvenient for you.
When it's a repeat ask from someone who often asks favors
""I've helped with a few things recently and I'm at my limit. I need to keep my bandwidth for my own work.""
You acknowledge the pattern without making it an accusation.

What to avoid — and why

""I'll think about it" when you mean no"
A delayed no wastes their time and extends your discomfort. Say no now.
""I'm not sure I'm the best person for this…""
This is an invitation to convince you. If you mean no, just say no.
""Let me know if you get stuck and I can help a little.""
You've just reopened the door after closing it. If you're not available for the project, don't offer a partial availability that will expand.

Responses when they don't accept the no

They say:
""I thought we were friends.""
You say:
"We are. I still can't take this on."
They say:
""It will only take a few hours.""
You say:
"I'm not in a position to commit to it, even for a few hours."
They say:
""I really need this.""
You say:
"I understand. I'm not going to be the person who helps you with this. I hope you find the right fit."

The dynamic under the surface

Side projects and favors seem small in isolation. The reason to get disciplined about them is that they are not isolated — they are a pattern. Every uncommitted yes trains the other person to keep asking. Every favor that goes unreciprocated shifts the power dynamic of the relationship. The no is not about this specific ask. It is about the kind of relationship you want to be in with this person going forward.
